Luther Carter

Luther Carter of Acworth, Georgia,  started his career at Sutallie Speedway in 1969, and would record wins at that track, as well as the old Canton International Speedway, Dixie Speedway and Rome Speedway.

Carter won three out of fur races at Canton and Sutallie in a 6-cylinder 1949 Chevy Coupe owned by Buddy Ragsdale.  Carter drove his own car to victories in 36 out of 56 races in one season during the early ‘70s.

Over the next few years, Carter would record wins at Macon, Jefco, Pensacola, Fl., Montgomery, Al. and Opp, Al.

Those years included a memorable duel at Dixie Speedway when the track was paved that saw Carter best future NASCAR star Harry Gant.

Carter won the Coca Cola 200 at Dixie in 1985, and won several asphalt events at Senoia, Georgia International Speedway and Lanier National.

Carter retired in 1999.

He says his most memorable moment in racing was the night he won an A-Class event at Dixie, and his son, Mark, won the B-Class event on the same night.
