August 8 saw the holding of the second annual Lakewood Speedway Reunion at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. Hosted by the City of Dawsonville, Georgia, the event brought together former drivers, car owners and fans of the great track.
All in all, it was a great day of remembering and honoring. On display was the trophy from the Lloyd Seay Memorial, held late in 1941, along with photos of the heroes of Lakewood as well as those who lost their lives at the track, including George Barringer, George Robson and Skimp Hersey.
Throughout the day, rare footage from Lakewood was shown on the big screen in the theater of the Hall of Fame, including recently discovered footage of the 1946 AAA Indy Car event and the 1954 NASCAR Grand National race.
Also on this day, it was declared “Raymond Parks Day” in Dawson County, with a proclamation to that effect being read. Mr. Parks was also given a key to the city of Dawsonville by Mayor Joe Lane Cox. The Dawson News and Advisor also honored Mr. Parks during the week with a special newspaper section on his life and career.
Thanks to all of you who attended, thanks to the city of Dawsonville and most of all to all the great volunteers who made the day possible.
If you missed it this year, make sure to mark your calendars for 2010. Here’s a look at the sights of this year’s Lakewood Speedway Reunion, as well as the Raymond Parks Day dedication ceremony.
