Racing Into The Future

Mike has won many track titles as well as the 1991 Southern All Stars season championship and the new 2004 Southern Thunder Tour. He leads the STT for 2005 but he remembers it all – where he came from and where he has been, but he still wonders where exactly he is going, even though he is still on top of his game.

“Many things I want to leave untold, unspoken from my past because of my checkered past on the track,” he said.  “People don’t know who Mike Head is now. Those are days gone by. I’m a different person since 1997. All of those old track incidents were not always my fault. Sometimes I was innocent. Not many times, but sometimes. My past was so bad, I never got the benefit of the doubt, and can’t blame no one but myself.

“As far as the accomplishments I have had in racing, you are looking at the tip of the iceberg by doing a story on me. You can take a Tony Stewart for instance. Look at him all you want, but I’m looking in the background and all the people that have busted their butts and sacrificed their time to get him to the big dance.

“My wife, family, friends, promoters and sponsors are the ones that count. They are the ones who have sacrificed, not me. I’m just the race car driver. What lies ahead from here, I don’t know. Those plans got changed years ago.

“My life is blessed today through with multiple memories of good things and the anticipation of all the wonderful things to come.”

And with a reborn life, his wife Carol, three daughters, seven grandchildren and God, whatever lies ahead for Mike Head, he will be prepared.

Editor’s note: This story originally appeared in the December 2005 issue of the Pioneer Pages magazine.  Mike Head continues to race today, winning the season opener at New Senoia Raceway.  On Saturday, July 30, the annual Mike Head Jr. Memorial will be held at Talladega Short Track in Talladega, AL.

On July 19, Mike Head was named as one of the five people to be inducted into the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame on Oct. 21 in Dawsonville, Georgia.
